Monday morning started early with the usual routine. The car arrived at seven to pick them up for a day on the set.
For Clay, Sunday had been a workday. While Gracie had been having voice and dance lessons, he’d been working Libby’s computer, continuing the background checks on all the people that surrounded the two.
He’d worried that there would be some awkwardness between he and Libby after the night they’d shared together, but there had been none.
As the car took them to the studio, he thought about what Libby had shared with him just before she’d fallen asleep on Saturday night. In the darkness of the night, she’d shown him her vulnerability.
In her words, and in the tenor of her voice, he’d heard the cry of a little girl who’d wanted nothing more than to be considered special by cold, distant parents.
The insight into her made him understand her a little bit better, but it didn’t change the fact that he thought she was making mistakes where Gracie was concerned. But sleeping with Libby didn’t give him the right to tell her what he thought. Making love with Libby didn’t give him license to butt into her life.
“Today I get to swing on a rope and save my friends from the wicked uncle Jasper,” Gracie said as the car pulled up to the movie studio gates.
“Swing on a rope? Sounds exciting,” Clay replied.
“When Jordan told me about it, I was scared, but we practiced and it’s really not scary at all,” Gracie explained.
“She’ll be fine. I’ll be the one having a heart attack while they film the scene,” Libby said with a laugh.
At that moment the car pulled to a halt and they got out and went inside where Gracie went directly to makeup and Clay and Libby took their usual seats in the area for the parents.
“I hear today is the day little Gracie gets to play hero,” Marlene Baker said from just behind Clay. Clay clenched his jaw at the slightly catty tone in the woman’s voice. He should be used to it. All the parents seemed to suffer a heady dose of cattiness when they spoke to each other.
“And I heard you-all had a little scare on Saturday.” This time it was Richard who spoke from behind them.
Clay turned in his chair to look at the man. “And how did you hear that?”
Richard smiled. “There aren’t many secrets in this town. The old grapevine is alive and well.”
“It definitely gave us some tense moments,” Libby said. “But all’s well that ends well.”
“I guess it’s just a reminder that we always need to be vigilant when it comes to the safety of our kids,” Richard said. “Especially in this line of work.”
Clay said nothing, but what he wanted to ask was why parents would willfully place their children in a business that put them in the public eye, that made them potential targets for obsessed or mentally deranged people.
Had they forgotten what had happened to JonBenet Ramsey? Funny, he’d never considered the ramifications of a child star until now, until Gracie.
